Intelligent Reflecting Surface Enhanced Wideband MIMO-OFDM Communications: From Practical Model to Reflection Optimization

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is envisioned as a revolutionary technology for future wireless communication systems since it can intelligently change radio environment and integrate into optimization. However, most existing works adopted an ideal IRS reflection model, which impractical cause significant performance degradation in realistic wideband systems. To address this issue, we first study the dual phase- amplitude-squint effect of reflected signals present simplified practical model signals. Then, enhanced multiuser multi-input single-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MU-MISO-OFDM) system investigated. We aim to jointly design transmit beamformer case using both continuous discrete phase shifters maximize average sum-rate over all subcarriers. By exploiting relationship between maximization mean square error (MSE) minimization, original problem equivalently transformed multi-block/variable problem, be efficiently solved by block coordinate descent (BCD) method.
